This species arrived in Europe in the penultimate decade of the 19th century, being made in the USA First appeared in France (1881), then in Germany (1885), today it is present in almost all countries of our continent.
Can be found in Romania especially in Mures, Cris, Somes River and Bega.
American Catfish form resembles that of normal catfish, although not related to it, as part of another family (Ictaluridae). Most of the upper jaw are distributed as follows: two near the corner of her mouth, bent down, the other two near the eyes and facing up, a little back, like horns. The sleeve 4 on the lower jaw are short and arranged in a single line. Behind the dorsal fin, has a pygmy catfish adipose fin, like the fish in the trout family.
Muscle near the tail is observed slightly below the thin skin of fish, with projections up to them. The average length of American Catfish is 18-25 cm, rarely exceeding 40 cm. Average weight is 160-200 g, very rarely (the farmers) were taken and samples of 1 kg. American Catfish prefer quiet waters rich in vegetation submersible, with the bottom covered with sand or mud. In rivers, seeking the preferred places where waters are more gentle.
Spring and autumn is in the shallow parts of water, while the hot summer days to withdraw to areas where water is deeper. Move less during the day, maintaining rather inactive, near bottom.
Wheat American Catfish consists of eggs, fish fry and chicken, aquatic insects and their larvae, vegetable matter in decomposition, plant seeds, debris, etc..
